Ramses Wissa Wassef Art Centre

Understanding their Life throught their Craft

From Octobre to Novembre 2024, I had the honor to learn and work alongside the wonderful fine cotton weavers and batik artists of the Ramses Wissa Wassef Art Centre in Haraneyah, Giza in Egypt. Created by Ramses Wissa Wassef in the 1950's, the centre's mission is to give a creative voice to young egyptian villagers, especially women, to break away from formal educations and ways of living. The Wissa Wassef family and especially  Taya and her mom Yoanna (head of the cotton weaving section) were the most amazing intermediaries. Their dedication to the community of Haraneyah is so inspiring ! Thank you to the  weavers for being such welcoming and generous teachers, despite us speaking different language, thank you to Nadra who welcomed me in her family house and cooked me the best diner…
I think meeting people in their environment and their differences is the most magical form of encounter. And Craft is a great enabler, it connects individuals in the most beautiful way and beyond traditional language. And this is just the beginning of my mission and exploration !
